Melling Station needs to move to create space for the new interchange. The newly relocated station will be closer to central Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai - Lower Hutt and connect to the central city via a new walking and cycling bridge.

There are currently no plans to extend the rail line further north. However, the new Melling interchange has been designed to accommodate a rail line if the train line is extended in the future.
