Why do we need to invest in flood protection - what does Greater Wellington want to achieve with the Hutt River flood capacity plan?

A system failure in a flood event would be a disaster for the Hutt Valley and Hutt City. RiverLink’s flood protection work, delivered by Greater Wellington is expected to safeguard residents from large (100 year ARI) flood events that could affect up to 4,030  buildings (homes, business, schools etc)  For the predicted 2130 climate the predicted number of flooded buildings more than doubles to 8,652.
