Why are two bridges proposed as part of the project?

The project includes two bridges – the new road bridge replacing the current Melling Bridge, and a separate pedestrian and cycle bridge. The road bridge provides vehicle access to the new State Highway 2 interchange and is the connection between Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai - Lower Hutt central city and the Western Hills suburbs of Tirohanga and Harbour View. It will include walking and cycling paths as part of the connection to those suburbs.

The pedestrian and cycle bridge has a different purpose. It aims to provide a short direct way for people to walk or bike between the central city and the newly relocated Melling Station. It will support further place making, enabling apartment development in the southern part of the central city by providing convenient access to public transport including trains to Wellington. This is a more cost-effective way of linking train services to the central city, compared with building a rail bridge to provide a station inside the city centre. It will also be a key part of the Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai - Lower Hutt cycling network, connecting the central city and the Hutt River Trail with the Petone to Melling cycleway, via a new connection delivered as part of the project.
