These open days were an opportunity for the public to see how the indicative plans were looking for improvements to river health, city growth, flood protection, amenities and transport connections in Lower Hutt. Feedback was considered (alongside input from our technical specialists, and project partners) as we worked to improve our draft plans. Our next step is to finalise these plans and submit them as part of our applications for resource consent in early 2021.

When
Projects that may have an effect on the environment or on people need to have a resource consent before they can proceed.
When we are granted resource consent, we will then continue to develop the plans for RiverLink in more detail. There will be opportunities for you to provide feedback at each stage as we work through to starting construction.
Who
RiverLink is a partnership between Greater Wellington Regional Council, Hutt City Council, and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. Together the agencies are investing around $700 million to revitalise Te Awa Kairangi Hutt River, including $420 million invested by the NZ Upgrade Programme, $145 million from Greater Wellington and $138.4 million committed by Hutt City Council towards the project. RiverLink is working closely with Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika, and Ngāti Toa Rangatira as mana whenua to create a more resilient, connected, vibrant city.
Why
The project incorporates transport improvements, including a new Melling Interchange and River Bridge, as well as walking, cycling and public transport links.
Improved flood protection will safeguard Lower Hutt against floods that could cause major damage to homes and businesses.
The changes in the central city will enable development to make the central city more vibrant as it turns to face Te Awa Kairangi.

“We had over two hundred people at the open day at the Dowse on Saturday. This was a pleasing turnout as we wanted to hear what the community think of our plans, and answer any questions people had”“We are now considering the community’s feedback today alongside input from our technical specialists, and project partners as we work to improve our draft plans.”
“We are also planning for another open day on Saturday 13 February”
“Our next step is to finalise these plans and submit them as part of our applications for resource consent in mid 2021. If we are granted resource consent, we will then continue to develop the plans for RiverLink in more detail.”
